I was thinking any kind of high end exotics, anything that would be typically unattainable to the working middle class person.

Basically the cars people we would dream to own, but would not know true cost of owning.

Something like this?

Owner had a major service done on a F355, plus new header, new tires, new axle boots, and some other stuff. $20k

$218.40/man hour. That's a pricey mechanic.

Would you want a kid fresh out of school working on your 355?

Very few mechanics, fresh out of school or otherwise, make $218 an hour.

Well presumably neither do these mechanics. But what they make and what they charge for them are separate.

The ones who specialize in exotics and who have experience and reputation do. All day long ...

Worth noting that you had ~$5k worth of parts/labor that could be considered 'optional' (aka not maintenance) with the new headers. Then again it could be argued that having aftermarket headers on that heavenly sounding 5 valve V8 should be a requirement.

Not my car (I drive a pickup, not an Italian exotic :)

But if I won the Powerball... I know where the closest dealer is!

Yeah I agree, that bill had some things in it that weren't exactly needed.

$20k for a trip to the shop is expensive but I'm sure just for your regular oil change, tire rotation, belts, fuses, etc it wouldn't be that bad. Probably around $6k.

You could probably stand to black the guys VIN out there...

verdegrrl might do it if you ask. She's got a Ferrari and a Maserati I believe. Pic+thread

What kind of rims do you have?

Rims are old dude.... I have 15' hubcaps. Thats where its at.

What kind of cars do you normally crush at the monster truck rallies?

Smart cars, Fiat 500's, Go Ggo mobiles. The usual.

i can only speak to muscle car ownership, not exotic to me, but if it is to you, ask away.

I knew a guy that had to pay $12k to have the belts replaced on his Testarossa.

A friend of mine spent $10k getting his late 80s Bentley tuned up. Parts are expensive. It didn't sound like he had much done; I know he got the alternator replaced. He doesn't drive it much, so the oil tends to drain out. The repair shops see a car like that and figure the owner is pretty cost insensitive (which in this case is true).

He has owned that car since it was new and keeps it for nostalgia. He virtually never drives it.

My uncle had the cambelt done on his 1994 Ferrari 348gtb shortly before he topped himself. Cost him $5k and that was with my discount on parts and labour.

I don't think of it as a true exotic, but my beater Porsche is costing an arm and a leg to keep running and I do most of the maintenance myself. Right there is what separates it from a true exotic in my mind, one cannot simply change the oil/battery/coolant etc in a newer Ferrari/Lambo etc. You'd need a few grand in computers just to reset the oil light, as well as a few hours and a lot of specialized tools making it a bargain to get it done somewhere else at $200/hr

turbo 944

Autocrossing it is the most fun you can have with your clothes on, but fixing it is another story.

I love me some turbo 944. I've had two 928s myself. I love the V8 of the 928 but I think parts are more readily available for the 944. Interior parts for the 928 alone cost an arm and a leg.

I thought my 2001 Insight was expensive with $60 oil changes and parts that were triple that of a normal Honda.

I got a Hyundai Coupe 2.0 last week, AMA.

I'm kind of upset that my previous post was downvoted - I could probably do this AMA. Not as an owner of an exotic, but as someone who runs in those circles.

If it were a couple of specific questions, I could answer them here.

I can help out here. I've owned a Ferrari, Audi R8, Porsche cayman, and several other exotic cars in the last year. I'm also in my 20's.

I have the 458 Italia, maintenance is free for the first 3 years (unlimited miles) other than consumables like tires, brakes and clutch. For reference rear brake pads are $1800 a set, full set of pads and rotors would be around $20k.

The problem with this request is that us common folk won't understand the differences. When they pay $250,000 for a car it's like us paying $25,000. When they pay 10 times as much to do a quick repair at the exotic car dealer, it's like us paying a couple hundred. It doesn't effect us that much and the higher price and cost affects them the same. It's just adding some zeros... Nothing to see here.

I own what some people would consider an exotic car

its just a newer corvette though

parts are more expensive

thats about it

My boss has a ZR-1.

0-60 in 3.2 seconds.

He's 71 years old haha. He's awesome.

thats fucking awesome. I really cant wait to get my new engine built. its planned to be a ZR1 killer ;3

My neighbors got one, cant corner at all.

It can - three things need to happen. First is to get an aggressive alignment. Alignments at the factory are done to maximize tire life, not handling. Second is to ditch the stupid factory run flats. Third is that you need to learn how to drive the car to it's limit. Some of that is being hard on the gas on corner exit - which, if done improperly, will result in a crash.

i never thought about that, cause every time the hood gets popped i get a half chub from that engine.

Do you consider two deloreans to be exotic cars? :)

I don't know about exotic, but awesome for sure

Deloreans are more of a classic antique than an exotic in my opinion. They are awesome cars don't get me wrong!

How did you come about owning two of them?

Both were impulse buys on ebay. (and no, I'm not super rich. One is my daily driver, the second is my project car).

It does make lots of lists like "Worst supercars of all time". I always laugh when I see it on another top/bottom 10 list on jalopnik…..

How often do you have to do maintenance on them? Are everyday parts affordable?

I want a Ferrari 308 myself. They are relatively cheap http://globalautosports.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=search_cars&f_came_from=make&f_model_id=263&pos=1&rpp=18 (Considering it's a Ferrari.) I am just starting out in my first career job though and have a lot of expenses in life I will have to pay for but once I am able to save up some money I really want one of these entry level Ferrari's.

There was a delorean owner AMA a while back. Parts aren't too bad. The engine was a PRV used in many cars around the world, and the transmission is a Renault.

Cool, I will hunt down that AMA.

Take good care of your Deloreans. They are a rare breed!

Actually Deloreans are anything but rare.

In fact newly manufactured ones are still available.

If you have to ask, you can't afford it?
